Setup Questions

How do I install/run the program?

This section is devoted to the Setup tab within the application.

Check here to learn how to install the application on your mobile device.

What is the account?

The account is your identity on the FreqLoader site, your key to access certain functions as well as shared items, groups and friends.

Accounts are free and very easy to create.

How do I create an account?

Open the Setup::Account view.

If you have already created a FreqLoader account, simply enter the username and password in the first two fields and tap the Save button in the upper right.

If you don't have an account yet, fill in the other fields, ensuring you enter a valid email address (it will not be shared or exposed on the site) and tap the Save button to create the account.

Assuming the username was not already taken, the account should now be created!

Why should I send feedback and how?

Your input is really important.

We want to hear from you in order to achieve a better understanding of what works for you, what's missing and what you'd rather do without so we can make FreqLoader the most usefull application on your device.

To make it easy to let us know what you think or of any problems you have encountered, the Setup::Feedback view was included right in the program.

Just head to Setup::Feedback, select the type of report you are making, enter your message and tap Send.

If you are submitting a bug report, please be specific about what you were doing, in which view, and what happened. Thanks!

Is my email address exposed when I invite a friend?

Yes. We're happy if you feel FreqLoader will be useful to someone you know, and are glad to allow for an easy way to do so. Though we will be including a link to the site in the message, this is seen as a communication between you and a third party, so we otherwise don't intervene or mess with it. Therefore, if your friend cares to reply, the message will be going straight to your inbox.

Your friend's email address will not be re-used in any way but to transmit the message and, perhaps in the future, to amass anonymous statistics.

What is the equipment?

The equipment, as used in the FreqLoader context, is the set of material used to receive or emit transmissions.

It is divided into three type, devices such as receivers, antennas and accessories. Any entries you make under these sections will be made available in the Equipment row of the station and log entry editors.

To minimize the amount of tapping around involved in creating an entry, all three categories of equipment are selected using a combined picker.

Since space is limited on the mobile device, the names may be shortened in the picker columns so it's best to avoid sereval items with the same prefix.

  • ICOM IC-R1500
  • ICOM IC-R2500
  • ICOM IC-R20
might all show up as "ICOM IC-R...".

It is better to ensure unique prefixes for names, in this instance simply using IC-R1500, IC-R2500, and IC-R20 would be a better choice.

How does Backup/Restore work?

The Backup/Restore function allows you to backup your entire database.

Interestingly, the system supports multiple versions of backups, so you don't have to simply use this for data security.

For instance, you could maintain two different sets of data, one for work and one for weekend excursions. When you want to switch data sets, you backup your current version, and restore the latest version of the other set.

To use the backup function, ensure you have an account setup and network connectivity, then access Setup::Account. FreqLoader will take a moment to check for existing backups, and list them at the bottom of the view

If you wish, replace the system-generated name in the text field at the top of the view (which defaults to the current date and time). Press Backup My Data to perform the backup operation.

When the backup is successfully completed, the name specified appears in the list at the bottom of the view.

What is Pull From FreqLoader for?

Pull From FreqLoader is used to retrieve data queued on the site and import it to your mobile device.

Entries may be queued for import in a number of ways. Stations uploaded by others, entries in groups or sent to you by friends... anything you elect to import through the Connector is queued for download whenever you like.

When you are ready to bring these entries into your iPhone/iPod Touch, go to Setup::Pull From FreqLoader and tap Pull Now.

When the data is retrieved from the server, you will be asked if these should be merged with existing content or created as new entries.

How do I use Pull From Nearby?

When someone is sharing entries with nearby freqLoader users, you can import this content using Setup::Pull From Nearby.

When you tap Click to Search for Devices, you will see their iPhone's name listed, and it will remain there as long as they continue sharing.

Tapping the mobile's name will retrieve the data from the sharing device and import it. You will be asked if these should be merged with existing content or created as new entries.

What are the Merge/New options when importing entries?

Unlike full database restores, pulling entries from the connector or a nearby sharing device does not overwrite your entire data set.

Since these entries are potentially joining other existing entries already present, the question is what to do about collisions. Collisions are cases where an existing entry and a newly imported one might refer to the same station, log etc.

As a rule of thumb, if you are importing data from third parties such as from a group, you probably want to import as New. This will create a new entry for the item without checking for collisions.

On the other hand, if you are importing data back from the site that you've placed there yourself (for instance to perform updates from a browser) you will most likely want to Merge that data with existing entries in order to update them accordingly.

FreqLoader does it's best to be smart about finding real matches during Merge operations, so it won't overwrite any of your data by mistake, while still allowing you to perform useful edits through your browser or other software. For example, log entries only match if the start/end dates, category and station all match up while stations match when their name, category and frequency are all identical.

Note: some types of items, such as equipment, are always merged since it would be pointless (downright annoying) to have twenty entries for "DRAKE 2-B" listed in your Devices, no matter what the source of the data.

If you experience problems during merging, don't hesitate to tell us about it, with as many details as you can muster.

What is the Default Cat?

The name of the default category.

Station and log entries always have a category set, so you can find them again through the program.

The default category is also where QuickLog entries are placed.

When first installed, this category is named "Unfiled" but it can be named anything you like. The name can be that of an existing category. If the category doesn't exist and is needed, it will be created.

You can change the default category at any time. This can be usefull when importing data, say when pulling content from a nearby person.

What is Nearby Show Name?

When you are sharing content with the iPhone-less (anyone who wants to access your shared content through a browser rather than an iPhone or iPod), the page will display something like:

Stations shared by John Smith on JohnsiPhone

when Nearby Show Name is on, otherwise it only displays the device name.

The name is that which you setup when creating your account.

How do I use Log Sort?

Log entry listings are either sorted newest first or chronologically. Set your preference in the Log Sort row.

What should I choose for Browse Scroll?

When there are multiple entries in a category, stations and logs can be browsed using the right and left arrows at the bottom of the view, just above the tab bar.

In cases where you are looking at a specific row, the table can seem to jiggle around when the amount of information differs between entries.

Setting Browse Scroll to top will ensure that you see the top of the entry every time you browse left or right. Conversely, setting it to bottom (abbreviated "Bot.") will bring you to the bottom of the information on each change.
